… and just like that, the Tamworth Country Music Festival was over for another year!
For The Brook Chivell Band, it had been 8 days of great gigs, great people and seriously hot weather!
Brook started the festival two days early with solo acoustic support sets for good friends The Wolfe Brothers on the Central Coast, catching up with the boys and making some new friends along the way.
From there it was on to Tamworth and meeting up with the rest of the band! No rest for the wicked – it was straight into the first of four gigs in 7 nights at The Central Hotel. Always packed and always a great atmosphere in there and this year a new & improved sound system that really kicked it up another level! Having Tom Wolfe and PJ Kevo jump up onstage for an epic rendition of AC/DC’s classic Long Way to the Top put the icing on the cake for a ripping first gig!
A return visit to The Tudor Hotel (upstairs) reminded the band just how great the sound is up there! Very crisp, clean sound made all the better with guest vocalists Brittany Pavlo and Dana Hassall for 2 songs each. They also joined the band for other performances where their schedules allowed – thanks again girls!
Proving once again that the boys don’t just rely on loud amplifiers to impress, the band played a one hour acoustic set on the Kmart stage. The more ‘mature’ members of the audience really appreciated the lower volume levels and also some of the old school country songs thrown into the set for good measure.
Definitely one of the highlights for Brook and Anthony was performing at Nia Robertson’s Storytellers. This is a great event run by the tireless Nia where writers are allowed a half hour to not only perform some of their original music, but are encouraged to explain the ‘whys and hows’ of the song writing process and stories behind the songs. They also performed some of the more personal, acoustic songs they rarely get to play live. A fantastic concept which is growing each year!
9am is NOT the time to sing when you’ve finished your last gig at 2am that morning! Having said that – when asked to play a song at an awards event where you’ve WON an award – you’re not going to say no are you? So the boys grabbed the acoustic guitars again (along with Dan on the bass) and played their 3rd single Let’s Stay In to the appreciative crowd. The actual award won was a Gold Medallion award for the South East Best New Talent of the year.
Can’t forget the musician’s favourite weapon – radio! And who better to chat to than on-site radio presenter Kylie ‘Kylz’ Daniel from the Kix/Hot Country Radio Network. Kylz and Brook always have a good laugh and a chat in their interviews. As well as that interview Brook, Paul and Anthony were interviewed by Carter Edwards from the Super Radio Network and along with Dean Mackin presented Carter with the ICMA Best Radio Presenter (Commercial).
Another highlight for Brook was being invited (along with harp king PJ Kevo) onstage to play a song with The Wolfe Brothers at their main show at Blazers Showroom at Wests Diggers. Their other guest performers were Jasmine Rae and Lee Kernaghan – not bad company at all!
It’s always a bittersweet feeling when a festival like Tamworth ends – but once again the band performed to new people in new places and made many new friends in the process. The band is now looking forward to a great 2014 – and of course, Tamworth 2015!
